White House Chief of Staff John Kelly

Given the erratic and unpredictable behavior of the current occupant of the White House, Americans, though worried, appear to go to bed at night believing that there are adults watching over Donald Trump. One of those adults is White House Chief of Staff, General John Kelly, who lost his son in Afghanistan a few years ago.

When a President Fails

Few months after Obama’s inauguration in January 2009, he took  his charm to aggressively lobby for Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics. But that did not go well. CNN reported that “Chicago loses bid to host 2016 Olympics to Rio – Oct. 2, 2009” (http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/ 02/news/economy/chicago_ olympics_rejection/) But that was probably the most benign reporting of the event. As recalled by Salon.com — a left leaning site (https://www.salon.com/2009/ 10/02/olympics_6/), the Conservative Drudge Report declared that “The world rejects Obama.”

The Most Unprepared American President?

Is Donald Trump the most unprepared person to occupy the White House? Just yesterday, President Trump in his now familiar off-the-cuff and nuance-devoid language declared that Pyongyang is a problem that “will be taken care of.” And all day today, news outlets have upped the ante claiming that “US [is] prepared to [launch] ‘preemptive strike’ against North Korea if it goes ahead with nuclear weapons test” (www.msn.com)

The Lobbing of Missiles into an Empty Airfield

There have been numerous theories as to why President Trump decided to lob a few missiles into an empty Syrian airfield. The most benign explanation I have come across is that President Trump was moved by the sight of victims of Assad’s chemical attack on his own people especially children. As Mr. Trump himself noted the other day in the White House Rose Garden: “When you kill innocent children, innocent babies – babies, little babies – with a chemical gas that is so lethal, people were shocked to hear what gas it was, that crosses many, many lines.”

The Opportunist President Walking in the Ghost of His Predecessor

Donald Trump is an opportunist. He does not have the patience or intellect to work through a problem and advance a solution.  His entire goal is to gain immediate advantage and glory rather than allow himself to be guided by consistent principles or plans. He ascended to the presidency by tapping on peoples’ frustrations and taking well-thought out positions of his opponents and simply negating them without really understanding what he was doing.

The Mayor of San Juan

We have all been following closely the devastation hurricane Maria befell on Puerto Rico. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to be with the people of this great island. I have watched Mayor Cruz speak to CNN’s Anderson Cooper and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow — among others. At least in these two interviews, I am of the view that Mayor Cruz may be “over-doing” it. Specifically, she talks too much, and as is often in these cases, there is a danger of “slipping” in the midst of repeating a point over and over.

The Irony of an Illegitimate Presidency

I suspect the irony in the very likelihood that Mr. Donald Trump will become an illegitimate President may not have been lost on many. Mr. Trump’s political capital was built up on one and only one effort: To make President Obama illegitimate. While that effort launched Mr. Trump’s candidacy, Mr. Trump failed woefully in de-legitimizing President Obama. To the contrary, Mr. Trump swallowed his words, although he did not have the humility to apologize.

The Heat is On

By most accounts, Donald J. Trump was rich and successful. Despite countless bankruptcies, his real estate business managed to be successful. Many would also argue that his Apprentice show on TV was also successful. Donald Trump appeared to be enjoying his life. He was a playboy and could get any woman he wanted. In fact, he boasted about that in the now infamous Hollywood tapes.

The Day After

Like world cup matches featuring Nigeria, high stake elections as the one just concluded, are often too traumatic for me to watch. It’s like being in a pressure cooker. So I was in bed early especially when it became clear to me that the races I was most interested in, were not going the way I wanted — the gubernatorial and senatorial races in Florida; the gubernatorial race in Georgia and the senatorial race in Missouri.
